How to Repair a Torn or Damaged Patch of Wallpaper

How to Repair a Torn or Damaged Patch of Wallpaper

The double-cut patch that makes a repair genuinely invisible, how to mend a small tear, and why one offcut is worth more than a spare roll

For a tear or a damaged patch, tape an offcut over the damage with the pattern aligned, cut through both layers at once with a fresh blade, lift out the damaged piece, paste the wall and drop the new patch into the hole it came from. Because both pieces were cut in one pass, the edges match exactly.

Done carefully on a patterned paper, the repair is genuinely hard to find.

What you'll need

  • An offcut of the same paper, from the same print run
  • A sharp snap-off knife with a fresh blade
  • Low-tack masking tape
  • A small brush and a little adhesive
  • Seam roller
  • Clean, dry white cloth
  • Filling knife, if the wall behind is damaged

The double-cut patch method

  1. Cut a piece of offcut comfortably larger than the damage, 5cm clear on every side.
  2. Position it over the damage and slide it until the pattern lines up exactly with the paper on the wall. Take your time; everything depends on this.
  3. Tape it down at all four corners with low-tack tape.
  4. Cut through both layers in one pass with a fresh blade. Follow a line in the design where you can, such as the edge of a motif, a stem or a change of colour, so the join disappears into the pattern. A shape with irregular edges hides better than a neat square.
  5. Take the patch and tape away, then peel out the cut section of damaged paper from the wall. A damp cloth held on it for a minute or two softens the old paste.
  6. Clean the wall inside the cut-out. Scrape off old paste, fill and sand if the wall itself is damaged, and let it dry.
  7. Paste the wall inside the opening and drop the patch in.
  8. Smooth from the centre outwards, roll the edges gently, and wipe off any adhesive immediately with a clean, slightly damp white cloth.

Blade discipline matters more on a repair than anywhere else.

Small tears

A tear where the paper is still attached and undamaged usually does not need a patch at all.

  1. Lift the torn flap gently.
  2. Work a little adhesive onto the wall beneath with a fine brush.
  3. Press the flap back into position, matching the edges of the tear.
  4. Roll it gently and wipe clean.

Scuffs and dents

A scuff on the surface is a cleaning question rather than a repair. A dent where something has been knocked into the wall needs the patch method, because the wall behind has to be filled before the paper can sit flat.

Why keeping an offcut matters more than a spare roll

A patch cut from paper printed at the same time as the wall is invisible. One printed years later may be very slightly different, because ink and paper are physical things.

So when a job is finished, put an offcut somewhere dry and remember where. A piece the size of a sheet of A4 handles most repairs; a metre handles almost anything. Store it rolled rather than folded, because a crease in the patch will show.

When a patch is not the answer

  • Damage across a seam. Replace the length instead; a patch bridging a join rarely sits flat.
  • Water damage. Find and fix the source, let the wall dry completely, then repair.
  • Several patches on one wall. Two or three repairs start to be more visible than one re-hung length.
  • No matching offcut. Re-hang the length from a new roll, and place the join in the least visible corner.

How do I patch wallpaper invisibly?

Cut through the patch and the wall paper together in one pass, following a line in the design, so both edges match exactly.

Do I have to use paper from the same roll?

From the same order, ideally. A whole order is printed in one run, so any offcut from your job will match.

Can I repair a small tear without a patch?

Yes. Lift the flap, put a little adhesive on the wall beneath, press it back and roll it.

How big should the patch be?

At least 5cm clear of the damage on every side, so you have room to align the pattern and cut cleanly.

How much paper should I keep for repairs?

At least one full pattern repeat, ideally a metre, stored rolled and dry.

Can I order a small amount later just for a repair?

You can order more rolls at any time, though colour is only guaranteed consistent within a single print run, which is why the offcut from your own job is the best patch there is.

Great quality wallpaper! The print is beautiful, the wallpaper is thick, and fairly easy to install. Our small area took about an hour and a half because we had a lot of of awkward cuts. Will definitely be using this brand again!

Looks beautiful in my dining room and in a cabinet that I brought in during the remodel. The service was great and came quickly. The paper was easy to install. The only thing I am noticing is that it is pulling up in places. It might be the textured wall that is causing the issues. A high quality paper and I would definitely order again.
