What Walls Does Peel and Stick Wallpaper Stick To?

What Walls Does Peel and Stick Wallpaper Stick To?

A two-minute test to run before you order, the surfaces removable paper holds on, the ones it does not, and how to get a marginal wall ready

Peel and stick wallpaper holds on a smooth, firmly bonded, painted surface that is clean, dry, dust-free and fully cured. It does not hold on texture, bare plaster or plasterboard, fresh paint, chalky paint, or anywhere that regularly fills with steam. If your wall is not in the first list, choose one of our pasted papers instead.

This is worth settling before you order rather than after, and it takes about two minutes to check.

The two-minute test

  1. Look across the wall with a light held at a shallow angle. Any texture you can see will read through the paper and will stop the adhesive making contact.
  2. Rub a finger firmly across the paint. If colour or powder comes off, the surface is chalky and the paper will grip that loose layer rather than the wall.
  3. Press a strip of masking tape on firmly and pull it off. If it lifts paint, so will wallpaper.
  4. Ask when it was painted. Under thirty days and the paint has not finished curing.
  5. Think about the room. Does it steam up? Then use a pasted paper.

Surfaces it holds on

  • Smooth painted plaster, clean, dry and cured
  • Smooth painted plasterboard
  • Smooth painted woodwork and MDF: flat doors, panelling, shelving
  • Smooth laminate and melamine, cleaned first: furniture, drawer interiors, cupboard doors
  • Previously painted walls in good order, whatever their colour, provided a pale design will not shadow

Surfaces it does not

  • Textured or embossed walls, Artex, woodchip, relief coatings. The adhesive touches only the high points.
  • Bare plaster or bare plasterboard. Porous and dusty; there is nothing sealed for it to grip.
  • Freshly painted walls. Paint needs thirty days to cure.
  • Chalky, powdery or flaking paint, including old distemper.
  • Damp walls, and cold external walls that suffer condensation.
  • Bathrooms and steamy rooms. We do not recommend removable paper there.
  • Tiles. Grout lines bridge, and the surface is wrong.
  • Existing wallpaper. The adhesive would be holding the old paper, not the wall.

Why the surface matters so much

A pressure-sensitive adhesive grips by contact area. It flows into the microscopic irregularities of a surface when pressed, and the hold comes from how much of it is genuinely touching. On texture that contact area collapses to a few per cent. On a chalky surface it is holding a layer that is itself only loosely attached.

And what it is bonded to is the paint film rather than the wall behind it, which is also why the condition of your paint decides what happens on removal.

Getting a marginal wall ready

If your wall is close but not quite there:

  1. Fill and sand any damage, feathering the repairs flat.
  2. If the paint is chalky, wash it back as far as it comes, then repaint with a good matt emulsion.
  3. Let new paint cure for thirty days.
  4. Wash, rinse, dry, and dust off thoroughly.

If the wall is textured, it needs skimming, and at that point a pasted paper is the better choice for the finished wall anyway.

Test before you commit

Order a sample in your chosen colourway, and if you have any doubt about the wall, put a length up in an inconspicuous corner and leave it a week before papering the room. Twenty minutes now is worth more than any amount of guessing, particularly in a rented home.

Will peel and stick wallpaper stick to my wall?

If the wall is smooth, painted, clean, dry, dust-free and the paint has cured for thirty days, yes.

Does it work on textured walls?

No. The adhesive cannot make enough contact, and the texture would show through in any case.

Does it work on matt paint?

A matt emulsion in good order is fine. A very flat, chalky paint that rubs off on a finger is not, because the paper grips the loose surface rather than the wall.

Can it go on bare plaster or plasterboard?

No. Both need painting and curing first.

Can it go over existing wallpaper?

No. It would be holding onto the old paper rather than the wall.

How long after painting can I use it?

Thirty days.

What should I use if my wall fails the test?

Our traditional 150gsm paper for most rooms, or heavy-grade for bathrooms, kitchens and hallways.

This beautiful wallpaper is in my foyer and it sets off the tone of the whole house. In the neighboring dining room I’ve hung Thibaut Iggy wallpaper and the two rooms blend seamlessly. Excellent!

This paper was so easy to install! I have used all three types of paper and will never go back to anything but paste the wall. The patterns were correct and easy to Mark and to match and the colors were as true as my samples. This company has been great to deal with and will use them again in the future.

Looks beautiful in my dining room and in a cabinet that I brought in during the remodel. The service was great and came quickly. The paper was easy to install. The only thing I am noticing is that it is pulling up in places. It might be the textured wall that is causing the issues. A high quality paper and I would definitely order again.

Absolutely gorgeous and high quality wallpaper. We got samples from multiple brands and I could tell just by the feel of this one how high quality it is. The print is a total Florida vibe. It feels vintage, tropical, very old Florida. The 'summer' color way feels bright but isn't overwhelming. Truly love this wallpaper.

Ordered 2 rolls, managed in one roll. Quickest and easiest wallpaper I’ve put up. Hardly any wastage due to repeating pattern. Got a refund for the roll I didn’t use within a few days of returning also. When returning I emailed C&K for instructions and was given promptly and clearly. Would recommend and would buy again.
